The 20 MPs who could support community renewable energy projects in rural areas

Generating more renewable energy is an essential part of tackling climate change. Whilst the government has made commitments to improving large scale infrastructure such as offshore wind farms, the potential for communities to develop their own renewable energy schemes to keep energy costs down and benefit local economies is being blocked by unfair regulations and hugely disproportionate costs.

However, there is an opportunity to change this through the introduction of a Local Electricity Bill. The Bill would lead to energy market reforms that would create local economic resilience in communities across the country. By empowering communities to sell local renewable energy directly to local households and businesses, it would make new community renewable energy businesses viable and, by bypassing large utilities, they would keep significant additional value within local economies.

Power for People, a not-for-profit campaign group which has the backing of an impressive array of stakeholders, is calling on people to write to 20 MPs who have been provided with the opportunity of introducing a Private Member’s Bill to parliament.  If just one of these MPs elects to take forward the Local Electricity Bill in their name, this will be debated in parliament and have a very real chance of becoming legislation.
