North East ACRE members unite

on climate support project

Network members in England’s North East have joined forces in a bid to support their rural communities in taking charge of their energy needs.

Durham Community Action and Community Action Northumberland are working across borders to deliver the Climate Action in Rural North East (CAIRN) partnership project.

With help from the Rural Design Centre and the National Innovation Centre for Rural Enterprise, along with funding from the National Lottery, CAIRN aims to support rural residents in finding long-term solutions to their unique energy needs.

Many families living in rural North East England, like elsewhere in the country, rely heavily on heating oil, while at the same time also struggling with poor energy infrastructure.

As well as providing free home energy audits across Durham and Northumberland, CAIRN works alongside communities to identify practical energy projects that can help local homes and businesses to reduce emissions and bring costs down.

The counties’ younger generations have also got in on the action, with CAIRN visiting local schools and youth groups to share tips on how small everyday actions can have a big impact on climate change.
